Ok guys, I'm gonna get super hippie on you for a minute. Even if you think you're not down with this and it's something you would never consider doing, keep reading because I may just change your mind. It may seem "new age-y" to some, however, it's actually a tradition that goes back thousands of years and not just with Native Americans.
I think smudging your space is like taking an energetic shower. It's ritual alchemy.. changing and cleansing the bad energy. If you're feeling sluggish, negative, and/or stuck you could have stagnant energy in your field. Stagnant or negative energy can have extremely detrimental effects on your mental and physical state. Everybody's energy is different too, it could be emotional, like a fight with a friend, energetic, like a past life issue, or physical, like shaking hands with people all day at work.
It is common that people smudge a new house or apartment before they move in so they can start fresh.

Did you know the smoke from dried sage actually changes the ionic composition of the air, and can have a direct effect on changing our stress response and mood? It also has the ability to eliminate 94% of aerial bacteria in your home!
I love to use white sage. Some people think it smells like weed, but I love the smell of it; it's the smell of thousands of years of spiritual communion and ritual. It has a earthy, just smoked weed smell with a feminine energy. If sage doesn't speak to you, try palo santo. The smell is reminiscent of a temple and has notes of pine and lemon with a masculine energy.
What you need:
Sage or palo santo (represents the earth element, and when burned, the smoke represents the air element)
Abalone shell (this is meant to hold and burn the sage or palo santo, and represents the water element)
Matches or a lighter (these represent the fire element.. obvi)
Feather (this represents the air element)
How to:
Clear your space of mess and clutter. Open up windows and curtains to allow new clean air to enter, and give the negative energy an escape route. Light your sage or palo santo on fire in the abalone shell and gently blow out and allow it to smolder. Use the feather to fan the smoke around your space focusing on high traffic areas.
