Book Review: Just For the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Let me just say this upfront: 5 stars. I devoured this book in one sitting—seven hours straight, all the way until 1am on a worknight—and I regret nothing. Abby Jimenez just gets it. Just For the Summer is laugh-out-loud funny, heartwarming, a little heartbreaking, and full of that magical mix of banter and depth that makes a rom-com unforgettable.

The Premise? Genius.

Justin has a “curse”—every woman he dates ends up finding her soulmate right after they break up. A Reddit thread blows it up, and suddenly the internet knows all about his bad luck in love. Enter Emma, who has the same exact problem. Naturally, she slides into his DMs (iconic), and they come up with a plan: they’ll date each other and then break up, so they can finally break the curse.

Spoiler alert: the plan doesn’t go as expected. And I’m so glad it didn’t.

Why I Loved It:

  • The way Justin and Emma meet is so original and fun.

  • The chemistry? Off the charts.

  • I laughed. I cried. I had to remind myself it wasn’t real life (but I wanted it to be).

  • SPOILER: I loved that they broke up—not because I didn’t root for them, but because Emma realized she needed time to heal and grow on her own. It was such a refreshing, realistic take on love and timing.

  • SPOILER: And yes, I screamed when I read that Maddy and Doug got married.

This book is everything I want from a rom-com: witty, heartfelt, and layered with just enough emotion to keep me hooked and emotionally invested in every character (even the side ones).

If you love romance with a unique twist, strong character development, and some seriously swoony moments, Just For the Summer is a must-read. Just… maybe start it earlier in the day so you’re not up past midnight like me.
