I liked this book. It was fun, fashion-forward, and had everything you'd want in a beach read. I don’t understand the bad reviews. Has no one ever read a Lauren Weisberger book? It gave the exact same vibe.
The Premise:
Lola is living the dream as NYC's ultimate it-girl until one major scandal sends her entire life into a tailspin. Her reputation, career, and relationship fall apart overnight. When a harsh exposé by culture critic Aly Ray Carter adds fuel to the fire, Lola heads to the Hamptons to regroup. But her plan to sip rosé by the pool is interrupted when Aly shows up as her neighbor. What begins as tension starts to turn into something unexpected, and Lola has to face more than just her public image.
My Thoughts:
Lola is definitely selfish and messy at times, but she’s also figuring it out. I liked watching her growth. Everyone goes through a wake-up call eventually, and seeing that play out felt relatable. I loved the NYC and Hamptons setting and the strong fashion angle. It gave everything it needed to.
I went into this book knowing nothing about the plot, just expecting a fun summer romance with some spice. I didn’t realize it was a same-sex romance, so that was a surprise, but a good one. It was nice to see more diversity. As someone who has asked those same questions (am I gay?/ could I be gay?) it was refreshing to read a character dealing with that same inner dialogue. It felt honest.
This was a solid summer read. I don’t think it’s meant to be groundbreaking, but it hit the mark for what it is. If you like fashion, drama, and a main character trying to put the pieces back together, this one is worth reading.
