Book Review: Funny Story by Emily Henry

I just finished Funny Story by Emily Henry and gave it 4 out of 5 stars! It was such a cute read—predictable in that classic rom-com way, but still totally satisfying. I can totally see why they’re making it into a movie!

The Premise:
Daphne thought she had her future all figured out: dream fiancé, dream job, dreamy lakeside town. But then Peter—her fiancé—realizes he’s actually in love with Petra, his childhood best friend. Enter heartbreak.

Stranded in small-town Michigan with no friends or family nearby (and barely enough money from her children’s librarian job), Daphne proposes an unlikely roommate situation—with none other than Miles, Petra’s now-ex. He’s scruffy, emotional, and the exact opposite of Daphne’s polished, quiet life. But somehow, in between sad playlists and fake Instagram posts, the two of them start something real.

My Thoughts:
This one had a slow start, but the payoff? So worth it. I loved how Daphne and Miles both had to grow and change to really find themselves—and each other. The fake dating / revenge photo angle added some great tension, and even though it was a little clichéd, it hit all the cozy romance beats I wanted.

Miles is one of those love interests you don’t forget—quirky, vulnerable, and way more than meets the eye. The chemistry felt genuine, the emotional payoff was strong, and the ending wrapped things up in the most satisfying way.

Final Thoughts:
If you’re into:

  • Roommates-to-lovers and opposites attract
  • Fake dating schemes with a twist
  • Soft, slow-burning character development
  • Comforting, slightly predictable, but so worth it romance vibes

Add Funny Story to your TBR now—especially before the movie comes out!

Have you read this one yet? Let me know what you thought (and who you’d cast as Miles)!
