I really liked this book. The small-town setting was charming, the characters were fun and quirky, and Hazel’s story of starting over was just the right mix of sweet and entertaining. It had a cozy, feel-good vibe that kept me reading.
The Premise:
Hazel Hart used to be a successful romance novelist, but after a breakup she hits a serious case of writer’s block. In a desperate attempt to get inspired, she impulsively buys a historic home online and escapes Manhattan for tiny Story Lake, PA. What she finds is a house that’s falling apart, a struggling town, and a surprise seat on the town council. Things get even more interesting when grouchy contractor Campbell Bishop steps in to help with renovations. Between fake dates, small-town chaos, and unexpected feelings, Hazel starts writing again and maybe living her own romance. This is the first book in a new series, and evidently there will be a second book coming out about one of the brothers.
My Thoughts:
I loved the town and the characters. I loved the story of starting over. I understand the allure of the guy that’s an asshole, but I was annoyed when he freaked out about her having a drink with his brother. I also think that him freaking out because he realized he loved her was super cliche, but maybe also real, because guys are idiots and I feel like that is something they would really do. But she took him back too easily, and him moving all his stuff in and proposing was way too much and so presumptuous. I would be PISSED if someone did that to me. Overall, I thought it was really good until the end.
This was a solid read. If you enjoy small-town romance with quirky characters, charming chaos, and a story of starting over, this one is worth reading. It did feel Gilmore Girl meets Schitt’s Creek-esque. Evidently this is the first book in a new series, so there will be a second book coming out about one of the brothers. After looking on Lucy’s website, it shows that a book called Mistakes Were Made will be coming out March 10, 2026 and is part of the Story Lake series.
